Taking Another Look at Ourselves: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

“Sooner or later, all the people of the world will have to discover a
way to live together.” —Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“I look forward to the day . . . when we shall bring into full realization
the American dream—a dream yet unfulfilled. A dream of equality of
opportunity, of privilege and property widely distributed; a dream of a
land where men will not take necessities from the many to give luxuries to
the few, . . . a dream of a nation where all our gifts and resources are
held not for ourselves alone but as instruments of service for the rest of
humanity; the dream of a country where every man will respect the dignity
and worth of human personality. That is the dream.” —Martin Luther King
Jr., at AFL-CIO National Convention, Miami Beach, Florida, December 11, 1961

Collection of Offerings

Offertory “Deep River,” from 24 Negro Melodies, Op.59 Samuel
Coleridge-Taylor

(1875–1912, not to be confused with Samuel Coleridge Taylor, 1772–1834, the
English poet.) In the 24 pieces of Op.59, the African-British composer set
African, West Indian, and African-American melodies and folk songs to
piano. He explains that this is similar to "what Brahms has done for the
Hungarian folk-music, Dvorak for the Bohemian, and Grieg for the Norwegian."
