Notes to Four Sabras, by Leonard Bernstein

Randall Kidder

Each Sabra refers to a vignette or portrait of a different fictitious
Israeli child. A “sabra” is also what was known in the past as a
prickly-pear cactus, now usually referred to as a cactus-pear, the inside
of which is edible.

I, “Ilana” eventually became "Candide's Lament" in Bernstein's score for
Candide.

II, “Idele” depicts a dialogue between a Rav (teacher), played by the left
hand, who intones lessons in a melody which recalls Mussorgsky's “Samuel
Goldenberg” and “Schmuyle” from Pictures at an Exhibition, and Idele, a
very distracted young boy, the melody of which is played by the right hand.
Personally, I can't help but wonder if Bernstein's sense of humor might
also have been referencing two Biblical verses: Jonah 4:11, “... persons
who do not know their right hand from their left;” and Matthew 6:3, “...do
not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.”

III, “Yosi.” The piece is 37 measures long. There are 8 changes in time
signature, and changes between major and minor tonality every few measures;
it begins in G-Major but ends in C-Major. Dynamics range from very loud to
very soft. The rhythms are reminiscent of the “jump” sequence in West Side
Story's “Dance at the Gym.”

IV, “Dina” is written in three sections, fast - slow - fast, with the first
part written within a two-octave range but the recapitulation is written in
a five-octave range. Bernstein later adapted the slow middle section for
some of the soundtrack to the 1954 film On the Waterfront.
