Note from the Church Lady: I received email that I think is worthy of our attention and discussion. It came from a group of UUs from across the continent who call themselves “Save the 7 Principles.” I’ve copied and pasted the letter below, and there are valuable links to websites. I printed out the 19-page booklet, titled Article II, Study Report 2021-2023, and it’s on my desk if you’d like to see a hardcopy.
Here is the letter:
Dear Administrator or Congregational Leader,
Please forward this email to your Minister, your Board, and any UU in your congregation who you think would be interested in analyzing the impact of the proposed changes to the UUA bylaws which will be voted on at GA in June 2023. We greatly appreciate your assistance in helping to share this information with fellow UUs.
The proposal to be voted on:
a.. Replaces the 7 Principles and 6 Sources of our Living Tradition with values and covenants that do not have the breadth and meaning of the Principles and Sources;
b.. Eliminates the commitment to individual freedom of belief; and
c.. Deletes the purposes of serving the needs of member congregations, organizing new congregations, and extending and strengthening Unitarian Universalist institutions, while transforming the UUA into a top-down political action organization.
A group of concerned UUs from across the county have created a website (www.savethe7principles.org) to share our analysis of this proposal and why we oppose it.
On this site, you will find:
a.. A side-by-side markup of the changes (just the facts, no opinions);
b.. A balanced Pro/Con Review that can be used to introduce folks to what is happening;
c.. A brief Summary Commentary on the proposal;
d.. A longer well written case for retaining the Principles; and
e.. A detailed line-by-line analysis of the proposal.
It is our hope that our fellow Unitarian Universalists will be fully informed about the significance and impacts of these proposed changes. Thank you for helping us share this information with other UUs.
In Faith,
On behalf of Save the 7 Principles,
