Three Interesting UUA Events
1. Tuesday, January 10, Singing for Liberation webinar! Rev. Erika Hewitt, the UUA's Minister of Worship Arts, and Paul Vasile, Executive Director of Music That Makes Community, invite you to come play, sing, and learn with us on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 in a live, hour-long webinar: 1:00 p.m. Eastern. In this Zoom event, we'll discover the joy and possibilities of paperless singing (yes: even though we'll be muted). Our twin focus will be sharing new, empowering musical content and weaving that song into worship in creative ways. Advance registration is required: register here . Do note that registration is free.
2. The UUA Central East Region’s Winter Institute is not far from here, Feb. 17-20 at Salt Fork State Park. The deadline for a discounted rates at the park lodge is this Wednesday, January 11.
Hi from Jay Klemme, >25 year member of the UU fellowship in Wooster OH. In recent years, I've been part of the planning group for a UU gathering at a neat park setting that's approximately equidistant from Pittsburgh, Columbus, and Akron. I write now--see excerpt below--because, while "early bird" Winter Institute registration is open until later into January, the deadline for discounted room rate at the state park lodge is much sooner--Wednesday, January 11. For full information: https://www.uua.org/central-east/calendar/winter-institute-2023
For individuals who are familiar with Summer Institute, from which Winter Institute was an offshoot, decades ago: This gathering is much less structured. Low key. Informal but worthy vespers. Mealtime conversation that's better than the OK food. Lots of interaction with UUs, day into night, if you wish. Or, be largely on your own in a neat park. If you wish, give me a buzz at our home landline: 330-345-1957.
Registration is a two-part process.
First make your hotel reservations at Salt Fork at 740-435-9000. Please tell them you would like to book a room under the UU Winter Institute 2023 block. Rates are Deluxe King- $159 a night, Standard Double Queen- $123 a night, Standard Double Queen Bunk Beds $139 a night, Standard King- $123 a night. Reservations at this rate are only available by calling Salt Fork and identifying yourself as part of our group. If you choose to take advantage of other discount offers on-line, be sure you are actually paying less, AND it would be best to use the same name for that registration as you use to register for WI so we can get “credit” and meet our room quota. These rooms and prices are only guaranteed until Jan. 11th, so don’t wait!
Second part is to register for Winter Institute. The registration fee covers meals (Breakfast and Dinner on Saturday and Sunday, Breakfast Monday,) rental of spaces used for registration, worship and hospitality, and administrative costs associated with the registration process, venue negotiations and staff support.
Costs: Save if you register early! Early Bird Rate through January 24: $160 per person 11 and up, $80 for children 4-10; Regular Rate January 25 - February 12: $185 per person 11 and up, $88 for children 4-10; 3 and under are free.
Register Now Registration deadline is February 12.
3. Saturday, January 28, 12:30 p.m. - 5:35 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, Seminary for a Day, at First Unitarian Portland. This year’s spiritual theme is Transcendentalism. Our keynote speaker is Rev. John Buehrens, who served as UUA President, 1993-2001. A prolific author, his most recent one about our heritage is CONFLAGRATION: How the Transcendentalists Sparked the American Struggle for Racial, Gender, and Social Justice (Beacon, 2020). Rev. Buehrens will offer a keynote on the first Unitarian Transcendentalist on the Pacific Coast, the Rev. Thomas Starr King. He exemplified key spiritual practices of the Transcendentalists that need renewal among us today: personal reflection (often in the form of keeping a journal), and deep interpersonal connections crossing conventional boundaries. In addition, Rev. Buehrens will offer a workshop titled, “God Optional: Theologies Among Us Today.” John Buehrens and Rebecca Ann Parker surveyed the hope-filled thought patterns in progressive religion today in their book, A House for Hope: The Promise of Progressive Religion in the 21st Century (Beacon, 2010). While their framework borrows from a heritage of Judeo-Christian systematic theology, it also makes room for humanist, indigenous, and non-Western a/theologies. All such thinking, however, needs to meet some overriding and important tests to be effective. Tests which will be revealed in the workshop.
Registration is open until 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Sunday, January 22nd. You will receive a link to join via email on January 23rd.
