Dear Members and Friends,
You may have received this email from Ted this morning. It was meant for
me.
Some of us were concerned about the fact that there is only one candidate
for president of the UUA. I suggested that we send a letter, not from the
entire congregation, but only those who wished to sign it, expressing our
concerns. I hated to remain silent.
I asked Ted to draft a letter and then I added a page for signatures. I
will seek to obtain signatures tomorrow before the service and at coffee
hour. I wanted you to have a chance to read it and give it some thought
before tomorrow.
Thanks,
Nancy Luthy
The news that there is only one candidate to vote for in the election for
president of the Unitarian Universalist Association is disturbing. We are
becoming more like North Koreans rallying around the Dear Leader than
Americans in a town meeting. There is a legitimate difference of opinion
among UU’s about whether “anti-racism” and fighting “white supremacist
ideology” should be such a central focus of our religious life, but people
who raise the question risk being demonized as racists and pushed out of
the UUA. If we are to rebuild and strengthen our denomination, recruiting
young families has to be a top priority. The intense focus on racial issues
does not seem to be helping, we remain one of the whitest denominations in
America. Religious Education enrollments continue to decline. It is
unfortunate that the forthcoming UUA election does not provide an
opportunity for a reconsideration of policies that, to mimic the title of
the book that is the UUA “common read,” may have produced more Mistakes
than Miracles.
