Sad News

A Man of Marietta has died. Tom Sharretts (71) was a well-known figure to
many in Marietta and his passing is a sad case of a cautionary tale. Be
careful to wear reflective gear and clothes if you are out at night. For
those driving automobiles in our community- You are responsible to watch
for bicycles, pedestrians, and animals because you are bigger and can hurt
someone. It was a terrible accident Saturday night on Route 7.

Tom suffered many health problems and challenges over the years, yet found
a way to be kind, thoughtful and engaged in his wider community. Many
FUUSM folk offered rides to Tom (who didn’t drive) *{Anna Prince brought
Tom Sharretts and a pot of local green beans to a birthday bash in
2012-FB}. * If we didn’t offer, Tom would ask for rides to facilitate his
participation and he regularly used our limited bus system to attend
lectures and musical concerts of all kinds. Tom helped to promote the
cultural events of our community.

He wrote his first Letter to the Editor (Marietta Times) in support of the
Mid-Ohio Valley Players production of All My Sons - written by Arthur Miller

In an interview about the weather Wintry Winter? Jan. 30 2017 (posted on
FUUSM 2/2/2017)

*“I’d like to see more snow but I guess it’s all melted already,”* he said
referring to the small snowfall Marietta saw on Sunday night. However, the
clear sidewalks on Monday enabled him to walk to the library and to
Marietta College for a Learning in Retirement class.

Tom asked a lot of questions in pursuit of his interests and passion for
learning and history. He told many stories of friends, neighbors & famous
people of the area and loved to give birthday cards and gifts.

His presence in our community was a great gift and we mourn his passing,
even as we remember fondly his unique personality and spirit, and we will
share his stories, now that he is gone.

Your minister,

Rev. Kathryn Hawbaker
