Sunday, October 9, is a Social Justice Sunday, and the afternoon event is a
unique opportunity, with an authoritative leader. Callie Lyons literally
wrote the book on the locally manufactured (and dumped) toxin C8,
*Stain-Resistant,
Nonstick, Waterproof & Lethal. *Here's more information about the event:
Social Justice Sunday: Toxic Tour with Callie Lyons
It's that spooky time of year when folks visit haunted houses for a good
scare. So, you might say it's the perfect time for a Toxic Tour! Local
author and activist Callie Lyons will lead us on a virtual and then an
actual tour of top toxic sites in the mid-Ohio Valley. The program begins
on October 9 at 1 p.m. in the FUUSM social hall with the screening of a
35-minute student film of Lyons' tour. Following the showing, those
interested will visit the actual sites. The tour takes roughly two hours.
Sites are handicap accessible; there will be no trespassing on private
property. Up to 25 people may go on the physical tour. Please plan to
carpool.
Callie writes "Inspired by Lois GIbbs of the Love Canal and local
environmental advocates, the tour is an exploration of the most polluted
sites in the Mid-Ohio Valley."
"We'll visit a series of active and historic sites that tell of the
intrusion of industry and ongoing poisoning of this land and the people who
live here. Highlights include a radioactive playground, the site that first
challenged and then defined Nixon's newborn EPA, and the lethal workplace
of a criminal polluter."
"There are two ways to participate. Journey with us to visit these sites in
person or embark on a virtual experience by means of a student-made
documentary." Participants may opt to do both.
"Toxic tourists," Lyons continues, "will want to be prepared. It's a good
idea to bring a rescue inhaler if you use one and have your go to headache
remedy on hand. Also, bring your sunglasses to best view emissions."
"It will be a fast-paced and lively conversation as you join the tour taken
by hundreds of researchers, journalists, and students since 2007."
"An important part of telling the story of what happened with DuPont in the
Mid-Ohio Valley involves sharing the local perspective with students,
researchers, environmental activists, and journalists who reach out to
Lyons every year."
"Since 2007 Lyons has led individuals and groups on a toxic tour of some of
the most polluted sites in the valley. *The Burden of Convenience - 18
Miles of Corruption* is a 35-minute student film that makes it possible for
anyone to participate in the tour and join the discussion of how many
different kinds of exposure impact quality of life for residents of the
Mid-Ohio Valley."
In case of inclement weather, the physical tour will be postponed to a
later date and a group discussion will follow the documentary.
