Reflection 1 Our Caring Circle, Cathy Rees

Offertory There Is a Balm in Gilead, Hymn #1045 in Singing the Journey; African-American spiritual from the slavery period of the United States; Randall Kidder, pianist.

Note: Slavery in America is considered to have begun in 1619 when the privateer The White Lion brought 20 enslaved Africans seized from the Portuguese slave ship Sao Jao Bautista to Point Comfort, Virginia, near Jamestown. It ostensibly ended after the end of the Civil War in 1865. The spiritual was first published in 1919 by Harry Thacker Burleigh. It struck me as hyperbolically ironic that the first slaves were sold and lived in a settlement named Point Comfort. Are you kidding?! —R.K.
