March Is Women's History Month

Women’s Herstory Month - Moving In from the Margins

Rosemary Matson in a memoir on the Women & Religion Movement in the UUA-

wrote for the UU World magazine following its passage.

“The great fear was that the resolution would pass unanimously without much discussion- and with its passing, delegates would believe that they had accomplished something— like approving motherhood or apple pie— and not really understand that the business resolution on Women and Religion was one of the most important matters to come before them at the 1977 General Assembly.” (Ithaca, NY)

Women & Religion Resolution

WHEREAS, a principle of the Unitarian Universalist Association is to “affirm, defend, and promote the supreme worth and dignity of every human personality, and the use of the democratic method in human relationships; and

WHEREAS, great strides have been taken to affirm this principle within our denomination; and

WHEREAS, some models of human relationships arising from religious myths, historical materials, and other teachings still create and perpetuate attitudes that cause women everywhere to be overlooked and undervalued; and

WHEREAS, children, youth and adults internalize and act on these cultural models, thereby tending to limit their sense of self-worth and dignity;

THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That the 1977 General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist Assoc. calls upon all Unitarian Universalists to examine carefully their own religious beliefs and the extent to which these beliefs influence sex-role stereotypes within their own families; and

[Do this at all levels of leadership within the UU Association, theological schools, conferences…

make every effort to: a) put traditional assumptions and language in perspective, and b) avoid sexist assumptions and language in the future.]

Reflection: Where are we today?

Worship Service Schedule

Rev. Hawbaker and the Worship and Music Committee are shifting worship planning to enhance our shared participation and engagement, with attention to our in-person service adaptations. One in-person service will be offered per month.

Timing will be 11:00 a.m. for virtual service, (which can be viewed on the monitor in the Sanctuary); 12:00 p.m. (noon) for in-person service

(no congregational singing at this time). Both services will usually be held in the Sanctuary. Safety protocols will be followed at all times.

Thank you to all who helped with the meals for the Warming House this past week.

We have some great cooks in our church community!

Starting in March the hours have been changed to 12:00 to 3:30, Monday through Saturday. (Closed Sunday)

Volunteers are needed for serving and food preparation for each Tuesday from now till May first. I am looking for volunteers that can provide food

for about 10, serve and clean up. It is about a two hour commitment (usually 12:30 to 2:30). From this week’s experience we have learned that lots

of sweets are not necessary, and that meat, salad, rolls, potatoes and cornbread are big hits. If you can volunteer please let me know.

Moving Toward New Normal: FUUSM Nursery Open and Attended on Sundays!

For those with young children who may wish to attend in-person Sunday services, please be advised that our dedicated Nursery Attendants will be available from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Sundays, following all COVID protocols.

Schedule for March: 7th – Deborah; 14th – Deborah; 21st – Laura; 28th – Lela

Go Fly a Kite!!

The Ballantynes, double dog dare you to fly a kite higher than ours! For every family that flies a kite, The Ballantynes will donate $25.00 to the church. Flying begins March 1st and will end May 1st. On the second of May we will draw for the winner of a $100.0 gift certificate. Take a picture of your family flying a kite and send it to the fuusm email for all to see (and no Gwen and George you may NOT just hold the kite over your heads. You will have to run, let go, and watch it soar!)

As an extra bonus to the church, if you make your own kite, and get it in the air, we will donate an extra $5.00 for your family's kite outing. You may enter as many times as you like, however: after your first kiting you must donate $10.00 to the church. We will pay for your family's first outing only. You will be placed in the drawing for every kite you fly. Which means if you fly 3 kites, you will pay for 2, and be in the drawing 3 different times.
