"Daniel Parker: Faith, Conscience, and Action on the Frontier" Dr. David Torbett Worship Leader: Rev. Kathryn Hawbaker

The sermon will be about the wisdom gleaned from living with the memory of Daniel Parker (1781-1861) as I edited, annotated, and prepared for publication his autobiography. Daniel Parker was among the pioneer settlers of Ohio, immigrating from New England with his family as a child in 1788. He was a carpenter, mechanic, musician, traveling washing machine salesman, abolitionist, educator, and social reformer. He was also a religious seeker, for a time a member of Abel Sarjent's apocalyptic Halcyon Church. His real vocation, however, was as a self-ordained, independent, itinerant preacher of universal salvation. His autobiography reflects the struggles of an ordinary person to make the best choices regarding salvation, love, and justice on the antebellum American frontier.

Dr. David Torbett - The Israel Ward Andrews Professor of history, philosophy, and religion at Marietta College.

He is also an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and a member of First Congregational UCC in Marietta.
