Communication is a complicated thing. Body language, tone, even the look in our eyes tells us so much about what we are trying to say to each other. I read a piece by a minister who learned the hard way about the limits of email. He found that even the mildest comment can be interpreted as criticism and lead to hard feelings. He vowed never to handle potentially sensitive issues on line because sometimes what you thought your wrote is not what I thought I read. Personally, I have been in a couple of situations that blew out of control over email. It was not fun. I would urge talking in person or at least the phone. I found that just picking up the phone can help a lot. It tells the other person that I care enough about their feelings to make this small effort.
