The Today's Issues group meets on Sunday mornings at 9:30 in the parlor of
the Religious Education Building next to the church. If anyone wants to
join on Zoom, email tedgoertzel at gmail.com.

This Sunday we will discuss two essays:

>From The Atlantic, November 15, The Bad Guys are Winning

by Anne Applebaum. If the 20th century was the story of slow, uneven
progress toward the victory of liberal democracy over other
ideologies—communism, fascism, virulent nationalism—the 21st century is, so
far, a story of the reverse.

>From the New York Review of Books, December 2, page 18, John Gray, The Mind
Body Problem
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dkDVncHXrHgYt5_8kfpcVFWY6ZjfylQLd324ZUEqqAw/edit?usp=sharing>,
a review of How to Be Animal: A New History of What It Means to Be Human by
Melanie Challenger. According to the major monotheistic religions—Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam—humans have a special nature and destiny, different
from and superior to those of other animals. Created by a divine power,
humans resemble it in not belonging entirely to the natural world. They
exercise a freedom of will no other animal possesses and, thanks to the
afterlife, are exempt from mortality.

The readings are linked from this email. Please do the reading and join
our lively discussion.
