April 11 "Resilient Religious Communities" - Rev. Kathryn Hawbaker (11am Zoom and Facebook)

"What are the signs of resiliency in people and groups? We often think that strength and flexibility are opposite sides of the same coin.

But when they are united with resiliency, you can literally move the earth.

Resiliency united with strength and flexibility creates beauty in the world, and creates new spaces for life to flourish." - Tim Atkins, LifeSpan RE, UUA

FUUSM Happenings

GREEN

Over the last several months, FUUSM's Green Sanctuary Committee and Marietta City government have been working together on plans to add sustainable features to designated public places along the Muskingum River.

A planned solar charging bench, to be purchased through a project grant from DuPont's Clear into the Future program, is now mandated to be incorporated in the city's Harbor Renovation Project located near the Armory on the east side of the river. On the west side of the Muskingum, Rebecca Phillips has steered development of a planned native plant pollinator habitat garden, also partially financed by the DuPont grant. Following the recommendations of Andrew Clovis and other master naturalists, the area has been covered with black plastic sheeting for most of the fall and winter to solarize the area to kill off invasive plants. Through wind and weather, GSC volunteers have kept the plastic in place, checking on any necessary repinning weekly. Before the sheeting was placed, a crew of volunteers rescued established plants that were favorites of the Harmar neighbors who have previously tended the city-owned property. Once the plastic is lifted, a planting day is planned, probably in late April or early May. - Green Sanctuary Committee

Let’s Go Fly a Kite!! For every family that flies a kite, the Ballantynes will donate $25 to FUUSM.

Flying has started and ends May 1st.

The Cherish ALL Life Project You’re invited to make a mini movie on your phone to investigate this years’ theme question: How can we be mindful and authentic in cherishing all life? I am asking members and friends to make a short movie, so we as viewers can experience the life of the one who creates the movie. Photos are welcome and will be in the final product but try a short movie. Send your movie to me – Jane Tumas-Serna (jtumas.serna at gmail.com)

Commuity Events

EMPTY BOWLS: The foodbanks in Southeast Ohio report that 1 in 6 individuals, including 1 in 4 children struggle with hunger. Food insecurity is the state of being without reliable access to enough affordable, nutritious food. Although Marietta’s Empty Bowls luncheon was canceled in 2020, and a large spring luncheon in 2021 is not feasible, we are happy to announce that the Empty Bowls Committee is sponsoring a community-wide project to support our local food pantries

For three weeks, April 9-30, 2021, there will be several ways to donate to this community project.

ALL proceeds will be donated to support this community’s food pantries.

1. Send a check to the Marietta Community Foundation, 100 Putnam Street, Marietta Ohio 45750

Be sure to stipulate on the check that the funds are for EMPTY BOWLS.

2. The Marietta Community Foundation has created a special link for you to donate directly through PayPal, debit card, or credit card.

                https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=AZL83FLZVWF46.

Volunteers are needed: To volunteer, or if you have any questions contact – Virginia Mayle (740) 376-9921.

Marietta Earth Day 2021 Reimagined - Events Throughout April

George Banziger will host an information table for Citizens' Climate Lobby, Mike and Adeline Bailey will help with Mid-Ohio Valley Climate Action's display, and Ginnie McNeil will share information about FACT Ohio projects and activities.
