Written between 1796 and 1798. It is in the style of a scherzo, which
eventually replaced the minuet in sonatas, chamber pieces, and symphonies.
The minuet and scherzo were written in 3/4 meter ("waltz" time). Scherzo,
an Italian word, means "jest" or "joke" and was lighthearted and carefree
in nature. The last movement of this sonata is in 2/4 or duple meter so it
is not technically a scherzo but has a similar character, and is almost in
the nature of an Italian dance. One can almost hear the "hah HAH hah hah"
(accent on the second "hah") of laughter in the four-note motif of the
theme, which is treated contrapuntally in the manner of a fugue.
In 1798, the year he completed this sonata, Beethoven began noticing
increasing problems with his hearing. By 1801 his deafness started causing
major problems in professional and social settings. In 1802 he wrote the
Heiligenstadt Testament, a letter he intended to send to his two brothers
but never did, instead keeping it tucked away among his papers. In it he
wrote of his despair over his increasing deafness, and wrote that he was
contemplating suicide.
I only mention this because in spite of the worst affliction which could
befall a musician (he was completely deaf twelve years before he died) he
went on to compose the glorious Ninth ("Chorale") Symphony, which he never
actually heard, except in his imagination.
