Chris...Powell Bookstore is outstanding. About 20 years ago I earned a free trip to Portland, Oregon. My daughter came with me. We not only fell in love with the city and the Oregon Ballet (got $5 tickets), but spent a whole day at Powell Books. It takes up a huge city block in downtown Portland!!!bevPowered by Cricket Wireless------ Original message------From: Chris Hoke via Fuusm-lDate: Fri, May 22, 2020 2:35 PMTo: Annie Warmke;Cc: UU;Subject:Re: [Fuusm-l] Is there an alternative to Amazon?Another source - I have ordered books from Powell Bookstore. They are an independent bookseller in Portland, OR (?)It would be good if we gathered a list of alternative companies to support.ChrisOn May 22, 2020, at 10:59 AM, Annie Warmke via Fuusm-l <fuusm-l at fuusm.org> wrote:Since I raised some issues that make it difficult to look past the FUUSM creed and still shop with Amazon I thought I would pass along some alternatives.  While these are not inclusive of everything that's possible, it shows there are a number of easy alternatives.  I love Thrive Market and find that even though there is a small membership fee (which then enables someone who can't afford the membership to join) it's worth it.  After their initial rush at the beginning of the crisis lock down they have been able to be timely in their response.  I've ordered the tofu brand I like from other sites, and herbs from Mountain Rose.  When I go back to living in the real world I will purchase these items locally when possible.  Annie-------- Forwarded Message --------Subject:Is there an alternative to Amazon?Date:Wed, 20 May 2020 18:00:56 -0400From:Charlotte Tate, Green America <ctate at greenamerica.org>Reply-To:Charlotte Tate, Green America <webster at greenamerica.org>To:annie at bluerockstation.com 25 Sustainable Alternatives to AmazonFriend,Amazon is thriving… But workers are not. Despite worker abuse, environmental abuse, AND a completely lackluster response to COVID-19, Amazon and Jeff Bezos are accumulating more and more wealth and power. With a company this dominate, it can feel nearly impossible to NOT support this behemoth. But, thanks to our Certified Green Business Members - you can use your purchasing power to shift money away from Amazon. We expanded our list of Amazon alternatives to include home cleaning products, personal care products, food, and items to pass the time with.Share these sustainable alternatives to Amazon with your networks on social media: Don't use social media? Forward this email on to share with your friends and family!Due to the health risk that Amazon workers are taking every day, in March, Amazon increased pay by $2/hour and started providing double overtime – BUT, as of June 1st, Amazon will end this policy. It bears repeating, in the middle of a global pandemic, Amazon, a trillion-dollar company that is run by the wealthiest man alive, is decreasing pay and ending double overtime pay. This is completely unacceptable! But, together we can and will hold Amazon accountable. Send a message to Jeff Bezos now demanding that Amazon continue providing double overtime pay and increased wages while COVID-19 remains a health risk. Take action to support Amazon workers today!Together we have moved Amazon to commit to 100% renewable energy usage. And together, we can help ensure Amazon treats workers with the respect they deserve. Thank you for all that you do,Charlotte TateLabor Justice Campaigns ManagerGreen America  P.S. Your support means we can do even more to advance workers' rights and reverse climate change.
