OFFERTORY -  Maple Leaf Rag  - Scott Joplin

Since the counrty began to be settled by Europeans, American composers have
borrowed from European methods of musical composition. America's first
innovative contribution to 'Western" musical style and form was ragtime,
which originated in late 19th-century African-American music, evolving into
different genres of jazz. Later, Claude Debussy and Igor Stravinsky, among
other European composers, incorporated ragtime and jazz styles into some of
their compositions. "Maple Leaf Rag" was among Joplin's first compositions,
and probably represents the quintessential example of ragtime.
