Some may remember a pop-culture phenomenon that appeared in the 1990's
referred to as "The Mozart Effect" based on studies which ostensibly set
out to prove theories that listening to Mozart's music increased cognitive
functioning and reduced stress or pain. Sales of recordings surged as
expectant parents bought often specially designed recordings to play for
fetuses, some hoping to enhance development and perhaps give birth to a
genius; and others expecting to improve their children's performance in
school. I'm sending a link to an article discussing this in case any are
curious about this fad. On the positive side, it did bring classical music
to the forefront of public awareness.
There is no doubt that music can alter the state of consciousness however,
whether listening to it, or performing it. (And, I just like Mozart).
Paradoxically, often the easier pieces are more difficult to realize
satisfactorily than one requiring a lot of manual dexterity.
