Welcome
Welcome to the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Marietta (Mid-Ohio
Valley).
Please enjoy a time of gathering and greeting one another via Zoom
until the Welcome Slide appears and the Prelude begins, denoting the start
of the service.
We ask that you mute yourselves (or we can help) to establish a reverent
space and pause for the beginning of the service.
At the end of the service there is a brief time to share Joys & Sorrows,
and then an additional open time of sharing and socializing.
Please be mindful that the service is also streamed Live to FaceBook,
and because of this, the time of Joys & Sorrows will not be included in
public postings.
*Religious community is one of the containers to express our collective
grief and to be strengthened by the knowledge that we are not alone. This
experience of interdependence creates compassion and calls us to act from
that place of love for the things we hold most deeply. It kindles in us the
courage to confront *
*systems of injustice and nurture new practices of justice and care.*
-Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray, President of the UUA
First Unitarian Universalist Society of Marietta
Order of Service Sunday August 30, 2020

*Sun. Sept. 20 Water Ceremony* ~ In the Courtyard (9:30am) & on Zoom
(11am).
As all things are different and changing, this year’s annual Water Ceremony
will refer to our traditions, and also happen in new ways. When there was
a Sternwheel Festival, it made a strong connection to have it on the same
weekend, and it marked our Ingathering -the beginning of the FUUSM Program
Year (like the school year). This year we have scheduled the event at the
time of the Autumnal Equinox, to reinforce our environmental work and
education with an earth-based spiritual orientation.
You are invited to bring actual water for the ceremony in the courtyard,
and send photos (for a slideshow) of your sacred waters from this year or
previous years. Please send photos to Rev. Kat Hawbaker by Sun. Sept. 16
and include your name and the name of the place or body of water.
*Sun. Sept. 27 (11am) Fall Congregational Meeting* (Zoom & Sanctuary)
Your input and vote is important to address future plans and the proposed
budget.
Service Notes & Song Lyrics
*Isaiah 58. 1-14 *
1. Shout out, do not hold back! Lift up your voice like a trumpet!
Announce to my people their rebellion, to the house of Jacob their sins.
2 Yet day after day they seek me and delight to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that practiced righteousness and did not forsake
the ordinance of their God;
they ask of me righteous judgments, they delight to draw near to God.
3 “Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but
you do not notice?”
Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day, and oppress all your
workers.
4 Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a
wicked fist.
Such fasting as you do today will not make your voice heard on high.
5 Is such the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow
down the head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Will you
call this a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?
6 Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to
undo the thongs of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless
poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from
your own kin?
8 Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall
spring up quickly;
your vindicator[a] shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your
rear guard.
9 Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help,
and he will say, Here I am.
If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the
speaking of evil,
10 if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the
afflicted,
then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the
noonday.
11 The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched
places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered
garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail.
12 Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations
of many generations;
you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to
live in.
13 If you refrain from trampling the sabbath, from pursuing your own
interests on my holy day;
if you call the sabbath a delight and the holy day of the Lord honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways, serving your own interests, or
pursuing your own affairs;[b]
14 then you shall take delight in the Lord, and I will make you ride upon
the heights of the earth;
I will feed you with the heritage of your ancestor Jacob, for the mouth of
the Lord has spoken.
*Luke 4.14-19* The Beginning of the Galilean Ministry
*14 *Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee,
and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. *15 *He
began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.
The Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth
*16 *When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the
synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, *17 *and
the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll
and found the place where it was written:
*18 * “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to
bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight
to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, *19 * to proclaim the year of
the Lord’s favor.”
*I John 4.7-12 ** God Is Love*
*7 *Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone
who loves is born of God and knows God. *8 *Whoever does not love does not
know God, for God is love.
*9 *God’s love was revealed among us in this way:
God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him.
*10 *In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent
his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
*11 *Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one
another.
*12 *No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and
his love is perfected in us.
*A Change is Gonna Come* Sam Cooke (1931-1964)
Murdered at age 33
I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh, just like a river, I've been running ever since
C) *It's been a long, a long time coming*
* But I know a change's gonna come, oh, yes, it will*
2) It’s been too hard living, but I'm afraid to die
'Cause I don't know what's up there above (beyond) the sky
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change's gonna come, oh, yes, it will
3) And I go to the movie, and I go downtown
Somebody keep tellin’ me, “don't hang around”
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change's gonna come, oh, yes, it will
4) Then I go to my brother And I say, “Brother, help me please”
But he winds up Knockin’ me back down on my knees
5) Lor’, there been time that I thought I couldn’t last for long
But now I think I’m able to carry on.
C) *It's been a long, a long time coming*
* But I know a change's gonna come, oh, yes, it will*
*Streets of London * -Cleo Laine (1927-)
Have you seen the old man In the closed down market
Kicking up the paper, with his worn out shoes
In his eyes you see no pride And held loosely by his side
Yesterday's paper telling yesterday's news
*C) So how can you tell me you're lonely And say for you that the sun
don't shine?*
*Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London*
*I'll show you something, to make you change your mind*
Have you seen the old gal Who walks the streets of London
Dirt in her hair and her clothes are in rags
She's no time for talking, She just keeps right on walking Carrying her
home in two carrier bags
*Chorus*
And in the all night cafe at a quarter past eleven Same old man is
sitting there all on his own
Looking at the world over the rim of his tea-cup each tea last an hour
Then he wanders home alone
*Chorus*
And have you seen the old man Outside the seaman's mission
His memory is fading, With those medal ribbons he wears
And in our winter city, the rain cries a little pity
For one more forgotten hero And a world that doesn't care
*Chorus*
*Everything Must Change * -Nina Simone (1933-2003)
[ Bernard Ighner ]
everything must change nothing stays the same
everyone will change no one, no one stays the same
the young become the old and mysteries do unfold
for that's the way of time no one, and nothing goes unchanged
there are not many things in life one can be sure of
except rain comes from the clouds
sun lights up the sky hummingbirds fly
winter turns to spring a wounded heart will heal
oh but never much too soon no one, and nothing goes unchanged
The young become the old and mysteries do unfold
for that's the way of time no one, and nothing stays unchanged
*I’ll Be Loving You Always * -Stevie Wonder (1950- )
[Verse 1] As around the sun the earth knows she's revolving
And the rosebuds know to bloom in early May
Just as hate knows love's the cure You can rest your mind assure
That I'll be loving you always
As now can't reveal the mystery of tomorrow
But in passing will grow older every day Just as all is born is new
Do know what I say is true That I'll be loving you always
[Refrain] *Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky (Always)*
*Until the ocean covers every mountain high (Always)*
*Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea (Always)*
*Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream*
[Verse 2] Did you know that true love asks for nothing
Her acceptance is the way we pay
Did you know that life has given love a guarantee
To last through forever and another day
Just as time knew to move on since the beginning
And the seasons know exactly when to change
Just as kindness knows no shame Know through all your joy and pain
That I'll be loving you always
As today I know I'm living but tomorrow
Could make me the past but that I mustn't fear
For I'll know deep in my mind
The love of me I've left behind
Cause I'll be loving you always
<https://genius.com/Stevie-wonder-as-lyrics%2523note-1952492>
[Refrain] Until the day is night and night becomes the day (Always)
Until the trees and seas just up and fly away (Always)
Until the day that 8 times 8 times 8 is 4
<https://genius.com/Stevie-wonder-as-lyrics%2523note-19189415> (Always)
Until the day that is the day that are no more
(Did you know that you're loved by somebody?)
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left (Always)
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself (I'll be loving you forever)
Until dear Mother Nature says her work is through (Always)
Until the day that you are me and I am you (Always)
Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky (Always)
Until the ocean covers every mountain high (Always)
[Bridge] We all know sometimes life's hates and troubles
Can make you wish you were born in another time and space
But you can bet your life times that and twice its double
That God knew exactly where he wanted you to be placed
So make sure when you say you're in it but not of it
You're not helping to make this earth a place sometimes called Hell
<https://genius.com/Stevie-wonder-as-lyrics%2523note-17353542>
Change your words into truths and then change that truth into love
<https://genius.com/Stevie-wonder-as-lyrics%2523note-15279269>
And maybe our children's grandchildren
And their great-great grandchildren will tell
I'll be loving you
<https://genius.com/Stevie-wonder-as-lyrics%2523note-15279279>
[Refrain] Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky (Loving you)
Until the ocean covers every mountain high (Loving you)
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea (Loving you)
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream (Be loving you)
Until the day is night and night becomes the day (Loving you)
Until the trees and seas just up and fly away (Loving you)
Until the day that 8 times 8 times 8 is 4 (Loving you)
Until the day that is the day that are no more (Loving you)
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left (Be loving you)
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself (Loving you)
Until dear Mother Nature says her work is through (Loving you)
Until the day that you are me and I am you (Now ain't that loving you?)
Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky (Ain't that loving you?)
Until the ocean covers every mountain high (And I've got to say always)
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea (Always)
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream-Um (Always)
Until the day is night and night becomes the day (Always)
Until the trees and seas just up and fly away (Always)
Until the day that 8 times 8 times 8 is 4
Until the day that is the day that are no more
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left (Always)
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself
Until dear Mother Nature says her work is through
Until the day that you are me and I am you
Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky
Until the ocean covers every mountain high
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream
Until the day is night and night becomes the day
Until the trees and seas just up and fly away
Until the day that 8 times 8 times 8 is 4
Until the day that is the day that are no more
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself
Until dear Mother Nature says her work is through
Until the day that you are me and I am you
