First UU Family,
Several FUUSM UUs volunteer for Harvest of Hope, our local food rescue
program. HoH collects food from local grocery stores (past the sell-by
dates but still good) and distributes it to about 20 local food pantries
and meal programs. HoH is almost all volunteers (I think there’s one paid
staff person), with a collection/distribution schedule of 5 days per week,
every week. We are the link that makes 2 problems (structural food waste
and food insecurity) the solution to each other.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the need for HoH has increased because the
number of clients at the food pantries and meal programs has increased
significantly. At the same time, because many of our volunteers are older
and at higher risk, they are less able to help.
So, I am asking if any of you would like to volunteer for this work. HoH
is a very effective organization, and the work is very satisfying. There
are several needs for volunteers:
- Van Driver … Driving a full size van (no special training needed).
Lifting boxes up to 40 lbs. Typically 2-3 hours per collection/distribution
run.
- Helper … Lifting boxes up to 40 lbs. Filling out the run log sheet.
Same hours as the driver.
Note that the driver-helper teams have additional Covid-19 risk as they
(although masked) are working together.
(Cynthia and I addressed this by being on the same team.)
- Sorting and organizing frozen meat boxes for delivery. One person: 2-3
days per week, for 1-2 hours/day, flexible hours.
- Cleaning the van … Cleaning the inside of the van and running it through
an automatic car wash. One person: 2 hours per week, flexible hours.
If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions, please let me
know (740-374-8729 or reply via email).
Thanks,
Darryl
