When I was in Russia a few years ago the churches were the ones in this 
painting.  The ceremonies were very rudimentary and everyone stood while 
the priest spoke.  Afterward a young couple dressed in traditional 
wedding attire led a parade into the church where they were pronounced 
"married" and then the parade swept us along with them as they went 
outside to celebrate and take photos.  It was a moment of realizing just 
how young this country is, and how much tradition plays a role in 
success and failure of a culture.  Annie
