Questions from the September 2 "Changing the World of Work" reflection.

So, what as individuals can we do? The Reverend John Scherer calls us to rediscover our own humanity, “to come home to ourselves.” He quips, “You might as well be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.” Under that lightness is a profound truth: We are each unique persons with special gifts to give to the world. And one of the important ways we do so is through our work. Unfortunately, the dominant “business” model exerts pressure on us to focus on efficiency and profit and to stuff our complex selves into two-dimensional personas. Scherer, on the other hand, exhorts us to discover or re-discover our true selves so that we can infuse our workplaces once again with personal meaning and compassion. He shared five questions that can help us reassess our work situations and ourselves:

1. What is confronting me? (What person, decision, or circumstance is troubling me or challenging me?)

2. What am I bringing to the encounter? (As I confront that situation, what hopes, fears, intentions, limitations, talents, or understandings are energizing me?)

3. What has been “running me”? (That is, what has been my default mode of operation? Am I hiding within a conventional persona? Am I wearing an invisibility cloak of powerlessness? Am I following ossified routines? How am I like a hamster running in a wheel?)

4. What calls me? (“Call” in this sense is like the calling a statesman responds to or an artist of any kind feels compelled to follow or a social activist answers. The call may come from inside ourselves or from the world outside.)

5. What will unleash me? (That is, what will enable me to find meaning in life, to continue to grow as a person, to fulfill my purpose in this world, to contribute to the betterment of life on Earth?)
