FOLKLORE SERIES - Summer Solstice/Litha  (Speaker Christopher Friend)

Agricultural societies have marked summer's high point in some way for
centuries.  Usually around June 21 or 22 in the northern hemisphere, it is
the longest day of the year.  The word "solstice" comes from solstitium in
Latin (translated to "sun stands still").  Based on what has been gleaned
from surviving folklore and some recorded information by early Christian
monks, hilltop bonfires were lit at Midsummer to honor the space between the
heavens and the earth, as well as considered to be a time for finding
balance between water and fire.  Some say that the orientation of ancient
stone circles, like Stonehenge, were done so as to highlight the sunrise on
summer solstice. 

 

Open to the public.  Love donations accepted to cover space rental, supplies
and offering free events.

and providing handout materials)
