Dear FUUSM Family,
I write to inform you of what you may have already seen on Facebook, noting that not everyone uses social media in the same way.
Fred O'Neill has died after a long struggle, including a debilitating stroke and a reoccurring brain tumor. His ex-wife (an active FUUSM Board Member) Willa O'Neill has been faithfully at his side, along with daughters Erin O'Neill & Deirdre Wedig during this final chapter of his life. He especially loved his talented grandchildren and Maeghan O'Neill has dedicated herself to performing on several area stages, including services here at FUUSM. The family has been connected with the congregation over the years for services, weddings and child dedications.
Fred was our church historian for many years, devoting himself to extensive research and presentations. I greatly valued his work, especially his notes on the community contributions of various women of the congregation. He was an avid social activist and protestor, and wrote well researched and reasoned letters to the editor for the benefit of all. He cared more for his view of truth than getting the approval of others, and so at times may have seemed a lone voice crying in the wilderness.
Please join me in sharing your memories and stories as we seek to honor his memory.
Though I had thought to sing at his threshold today, I sing for him in farewell,
May the road rise to meet him...
All blessings, Rev. Kathryn Hawbaker
Minister with the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Marietta
