[Fuusm-l] Defying the Nazis Sept 20 9 p.m.

    Many of you have probably already heard about the Ken Burns documentary, "Defying the Nazis: The Sharp's War," which will air on most public television stations Tuesday, September 20 at 9 p.m. I just confirmed that time/date on the WOUB-TV web site.

     This documentary describes the dedicated life of service of UU minister, Waitstill Sharp, and his wife, Martha, in arranging support, escape, and financial assistance  to victims of the Nazi persecutions in Europe in 1939-41. You will notice several parallels to the plight of refugees from the Middle East today and the response to them in the U.S. 

     I am currently reading the book of the same title, written by the Sharp's grandson, Artemis Joukowsy, who worked with Ken Burns on the tv film. I've attached a one-page excerpt from the book which describes who Unitarians are (this was before the merger with the Universalists, of course).

     Watching this documentary will make you proud to be a UU. You might tell your friends who are not UUs about this inspiring documentary which is a vivid testimony to what we stand for as UUs.

     "The Sharp's War" reminds me of the statement summarizing what UUs stand for:

          Service is our prayer, and diversity is our strength.
