Yes, we really are having a Service Auction this year. It’s just a little later than usual. For those of you who choose not to read this whole message, the date will be November 18 at the Lafayette, all else the same as last year, only better. Donation form is attached, hard copies will be at the church and maybe online or you can just email me by replying to this email. Make sure the address line only says Mike Bailey .
One NEW thing this year! Next time you are in your favorite store or restaurant, especially if you are a regular and they know you, ask for a gift certificate or a coupon. You are way more likely to have success than I or someone who isn’t a customer would. Thank you so much.
For those of you who didn’t make it last year, or have never come, for that matter; here is what you’ve been missing.
Every year, FUUSM and many other UU churches, hold a service (and fine goods) auction. In our case it is our largest fundraiser. We have a country store (where you buy tickets to drop in a container for a chance to win that item), and we historically have a hUUge number of items for that. We have a silent auction for nicer items and set price, multiple purchaser services (or dinners). The big event is the Live auction. Jim Rapp will be our emcee and local auctioneer Randy Clark will keep things moving. Bidders participate in spirited competition for an enticing mix of art, collectibles, dinners and whatever interesting, creative services or items that our very generous church members and friends come up with. There will be a wide spread of munchies provided by the Lafayette as well as a cash bar with a professional bartender. Before the Live auction begins we will be entertained by the Fifth Street Quartet.
As a computer professional, I have taken some pride in expediting the check out process most years. We will be using our church software for the first time for the auction so all bets are off this year. Please be patient if it becomes necessary (to be patient).
Even though the auction is open to the public, attendance usually includes only a few non member friends and neighbors. I say this in case you are hesitant to offer something personal to strangers. We have never had a problem of that nature. All of the items and service to be auctioned are offered by members to (mostly) other members. Not only do we have fun and a great social event the night of the auction, but the fun continues over the next year at the various auction dinners and events.
If you or someone you know is moving, downsizing or otherwise have found yourself with an interesting item that you are willing to donate, you can take that as a tax deduction just like your financial donations. Services might include pet sitting, house painting or even computer repair. Any donation you can make will be appreciated. The auction committee will decide the type of auction items belong in unless you have a strong preference. If you can come and bid on items, you will be helping the church. If you can donate something, you will be helping the church. If you can’t get there, we can find someone to bid for you. There will be a catalogue ahead of time for you to peruse.
In order to come up with a catalogue, I need to know in advance what you are donating. As I said at the top, a form is attached. You can print it out and hand it to me or Adeline at church on any of the next 6 Sundays.
Thanks for your attention, Mike
