Minutes of December 1, 2021 Meeting of the Worship & Music Committee
In Attendance: Adeline Bailey, Kat Hawbaker, Nancy Luthy, Suzyn Mills, Martha McGovern, Annie Warmke
Theme for 2020-2021: How can we be mindful and authentic in cherishing all life?
Chalice Lighting: Breathe: A Letter to My Sons by Imani Perry
“In the Catholic tradition, there is a form of grace – the sanctifying one—that is the stuff of your soul. It is not defined by moments of mercy or opportunity. It is not good things happening to you. Rather it is the good thing that is in you, regardless of what happens.”
1. Minutes of November were approved.
2. Annie Warmke shared ideas and led discussion of Homecoming Project. Some ideas generated:
a. Establish a committee with representation from W & M Committee.
b. Launch the project in a worship service that includes 3 stories of favorite memories of UU/FUUSM involvement and why they are UU.
c. Determine process for collecting other stories – perhaps workshops.
d. Share the stories in services, on Youtube, on Facebook.
e. Hold culminating celebratory event in summer.
f. Persons to contact for ideas about collecting stories: Jane Tumas-Serna, Peg Clifford
3. Reflection on suggestions for Moving Forward with Virtual Worship and Return to In-Church Services: The group feels that, for the near future, worship services can be held as we are doing; that is, on Zoom, in-person with masks and distancing, and posted on Facebook.
4. Reflection on methods of increasing involvement:
• Clear sign-off between public and private segments of service
Suggested script: To those of you watching us on Facebook Live, we thank you for joining us. For privacy reasons, we will be leaving Facebook now in order to share Joys & Sorrows just on Zoom and in-person in the Sanctuary. We hope to see you again next week.
• Use of chat to message specific persons
• Control of Chat so the worship service is not interrupted
Annie reports that shutting down “chat” on Zoom is easy. Just click on the chat icon. A box comes up with some little icons and to the right of them are 3 dots. Click on the dots and it gives the option to shut off “chat.”
• Use of chat to contribute joys/sorrows/thoughts at designated time in the service
• Use of break-out rooms
• Establishment of ZOOM Greeter Team: Person would serve about one time each month. Duty would be to welcome participants as they enter and to see how they are and whether they have a Joy or Sorrow.
Annie has been serving as the Greeter on Zoom.
5. Correspondence: Martha has sent a thank you note to Martha Webster, Lawrence Green, George B, Piyush S, Annie Warmke, Suzyn Mills, members of the Board.
6. Financial Matters: Rob McManus (Nov. 14 guest speaker) has chosen to donate the $75 stipend to the Worship & Music Committee. Martha has notified Steve & Maggie of that donation. Kat - $250 donation online to UU The Vote and request for reimbursement??? Kat - Lawrence Greene - $150?
7. Involvement of Congregation in Worship Services and other groups:
Finance has tentatively asked for January 23 Sunday service in conjunction with pledge drive start.
Need to talk with other groups (Board of Trust Governors, Caring Committee, Building & Grounds, Membership, BRIDGES) about taking part in or taking responsibility for worship service?
Need to organize a committee recharge or committee fair event?
8. Holiday Card Project - Update: Adeline Bailey has consulted with other organizers to plan for the project. Cards will be available for pick-up on November 21 at the church office. Cynthia Ting created family packets, Chrystal Sheaves arranged for her class to participate, and Josilyn drew pictures of each distribution location. We have about 800 cards to be distributed to 10 area nursing homes.
9. For Advent, worship services will emphasize the four concepts Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. Kat and Jane Tumas-Serna have created an effective display of wreaths for the Sanctuary.
10. Design of the Christmas Eve service: The service will be live and on Zoom. It will start at 7:00 p.m. A recorded performance by the Choir of “Winter” will be included. Committee members will help with hand-out and collection of the candles.
11. As part of the Festival of Lights for Marietta, Kat and Jane have created a display that features Hanukkah and Winter Solstice. On Fridays and Saturdays, Jane, Kat, or other volunteers will be available 5:30-6:30 p.m., and the trolley tour will come by.
