Minutes for October 5, 2016  Meeting of the Worship & Music Committee 

Attendance:  Shari Miller, Rev. Kat Hawbaker, John Maddox, Suzyn Mills, Adeline Bailey, Martha McGovern

  1.. Minutes of the September meeting were approved. 
  2.. Correspondence:  Shari reported that thank you notes have been sent to presenters and the Planetarium. 
  3.. Workshop & Worship Service by Patricia Shelden:  Kat reported that a day of workshops has been scheduled with Patricia Sheldon for Saturday, October 22 (Death & Loss - 9 to noon, How Children & Youth Experience Grief - 1-3:30 p.m.) and for the Sunday, October 23, reflection.  She has notified community contacts and will include announcements in FUUSM services and publications.  She and Martha will be sure that a request for the payment of $250 is submitted. 
  4.. Report from Committee Recharge:  Martha will draft a Confluence article for January 2017 for feedback from the Committee members. 
  5.. Reports from Specific Task Teams:  
    1.. Sanctuary Decoration Team:  Jane Tumas-Serna will install the backdrop for the Day of the Dead and November services.  Shari Miller will consult with Tabatha Hubbard & Nancy Lee and the Women's Group about decoration of the Sanctuary for the Holidays.  Martha will contact Gary Hamilton about decoration of the outside of the church.  The decoration activity is a good way for new members to become involved. 
    2.. Special Music Team:  Martha will share list of  musicians in congregation with Suzyn.   Suzyn will check 5th Street Combo availability and possibility of trumpet trio (Blake, Tabatha, ?).                         
    3.. Piano Task Force:  Suzyn will contact Joe Baker to clarify membership of this group.      
    4.. Technology Task Force:  1)  Ralph Olander and Mike Bailey will investigate device for smooth transmission of images from the computer to the TV as well as an updated projector.  2)  Ralph has provided guidelines for providing recorded in-gathering and sending music in the desired format.  Adeline will publish the guidelines in The Confluence for November.  He can use music from a CD or mp3 player.  The music can be played from the mp3 player on a phone or ipod.  He requests a one- or two-day notice; that's notification on a Friday or Saturday for a Sunday service. 
    5.. Task Force for the Time for All Ages:  Shari Miller, Kerry Blair, Dawn Weidner, Cindy Burton, Diane McMichael, Adeline Bailey, and Ron Tepley.  (Rachel Hyde, Gwen Banziger -- possible additions)  
    6.. Clutter Corps: (Contact - Wendy Morey)   Kat will talk with the Board to see where the Clutter Corps fits in the organizational chart so that communication and decision-making are systematic.  
  6.. Music stands:  Suzyn has made inquiries with the local schools. 
  7.. Selection of Specific Lamp for Piano:  Shari will work with Randy to bring this project to completion. 
  8.. Expenses:  We will request $250 for a stipend for the Rev. Patricia Shelden. 
  9.. Cards to Community Workshop - John Maddox reported that he has close to 1000 cards already, purchased and donated in honor of Luanna Maddox.  He would appreciate help with delivery of the cards to the area establishments.  
  10..   John suggested another round of t-shirt purchase.  Some suggested expansion of options to ball caps, vests, polo shirts.  He conjectured that the profits might go toward the Piano Task Force fund. 
  11.. Theme for Year 2016-17:  "What does democracy look like?" 
  12.. Possible Topics and speakers for future services:  multiple intelligences, powerful children's stories, ages of women, This I Believe, family stories as carriers of family values, June Teenth celebration, reflections of people who grew up in UU congregation (Jay Phillips, Mike Bailey, Dean Banziger), Bill Bauer on suicide and kindness,  reflections of former ministers, Jim Couts on Jubilee Gardens, LeeAnn Gallucci on recovering from loss, Jeff Danner (mjwd58 at yahoo.com) theological topic of choice, Living Mindfully - Prepare for the Unexpected (Robin Bozian, Anita Newhart, Sue Montera, Virginia Mayle), anti-bullying and Shari's Flower Story, Quill as a storyteller, Quakers on consensus.

Bayan Sibaii on perspective of Syrians, January 8? - Martha will contact again.  Shari suggested that she be invited to meet with the October 30 meeting of the group planning for welcome of Syrian refugees.  That meeting will be held at 1:00 p.m. at FUUSM.

  13.. Reconsideration of Order of Worship Service - reflection on changes?
The Committee discussed and concurred that

  1.. Wheel of Life/Joys & Sorrows should always be a component, but for some services (such as the Water Ceremony) it can be incorporated into the sharing statements.  
  2.. The Affirmation should be varied so that it does not become a rote recitation. 
  3.. The placement of the Collection/Offertory can be varied; for effectiveness, it needs to be carefully introduced.  
  4.. The Committee supports the encouragement of donations during the service and also recommends that BRIDGES incorporate a collection as part of the young people's classes.  It would be good if they selected a cause/purpose and then collected each week toward that goal.
