Traditionally, theories of human development propose that one of the major tasks of life is to discover our identity and fulfill our life’s purpose through that identity. Pete Mather will explore the limits of the proposition of a singular identity with a sole purpose. Drawing from Walt Whitman’s statement, “I am large; I contain multitudes,” we will explore the liberating idea that we are many selves and that none of them can be fulfilled in life. Instead, we flourish through embracing and nurturing our multiple selves and the experiences they offer us.
