The Beat Climate Change Coffee House
this Saturday at 7 pm promises to be quite a fun evening - if you
have any decorations from the 1950's you
can lend for the decor it would be fun to see how we can create a
beatnik coffee house and celebrate climate change efforts...a
positive evening full of ideas and laughter (I'm sure about this
part anyway). Loaned items could be table decorations, lamps,
posters (or make one that reflects the beatnik language), records,
or tablecloths.

You can also be a part of the talent
by reading a poem or two, playing an instrument, or becoming an
actor in one of three very short plays. Please email or call me
if you have decor to loan (Annie Warmke:

at the end of the poster:

Beatniks were about pushing against the conformity of the 1950s
and 1960s, and illuminating their lives with literature, music and
experiences.

Black was in. A black turtleneck sweater or boatneck shirt is
perfect for a beatnik ensemble. If you’re feeling daring, don a
black leotard with black tights -- you’ll radiate beatnik with a
straight black skirt. If turtlenecks and leotards aren’t for you,
try a black-and-white striped sweater.

Leggings or “cigarette” pants (think skinny black jeans) will
compliment the rest of the beatnik look. If dressing up “in the
cards”, pair a fitted black pencil skirt with black tights and
you'll be ready for a jazz club.

Beatniks weren’t concerned with posh jewelry or flashy bohemian
statement pieces. A black beret or simple pair of tarnished silver
earrings is ideal. No jewelry at all is okay too -- just carry a
book of poetry as your accessory. Beatnik hair and makeup was
understated; a simple black cat-eye or thin line of kohl liner is
enough.
