In fact, in the United States,<span> </span><a href="https://www.biologicaldiversity.org/campaigns/carbon-capture-and-storage/pdfs/CCS-explainer.pdf" style="color:rgb(5,99,193);text-decoration:underline" target="_blank"><span style="color:rgb(5,99,193)">95% of captured carbon is used to extract oil</span></a>, adding to the climate crisis.<br><br>The<span> </span><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1198LPwlblg-wdbujqIG2H0LUekLvYXLR/view" style="color:rgb(5,99,193);text-decoration:underline" target="_blank"><span style="color:rgb(5,99,193)">petition</span></a><span> </span>outlines the Corps’ legal authority and responsibility to deny permits for CCS infrastructure, such as CO<sub><span style="font-size:8.5pt;line-height:12.126666px">2</span></sub><span> </span>pipelines, under the Clean Water and Rivers and Harbors Acts which prohibit the Corps from issuing any permit if it would be “contrary to the public interest.” All CCS infrastructure and CO<sub><span style="font-size:8.5pt;line-height:12.126666px">2</span></sub><span> </span>pipeline projects meet that threshold for denial, the petition asserts, because of the reality of climate change and the projects’ harms to Indigenous rights and environmental justice.
