Hi all. Thank you Roger for going through all the steps necessary with the city to be permitted to plant trees.

As a tree commissioner for the City of Marietta, I feel the need to tell you that trees aren't being planted because there just isn't any money allocated to do so. The $300,000 ARPA grant funds are designated for only maintenance and removal of dead and dying trees. And there are many, many trees in this category. Many issues cannot be addressed at this time because there is no funding requested by our city council and there is no one in the administration who is requesting it.

My suggestion is to come to a tree commission meeting and make your concerns known. We meet at 4:15 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month. Please contact Stacy to be placed on the agenda so we, and both the council and administration, know you're coming and can better address concerns you have.

Sorry for hi-jacking this e-mail Dawn. I'm just concerned that trees are dying everywhere due to disease, invasive pests, and climate change. There aren't enough passionate-about-trees people to demand that cities address the issue. I think we're going to need radical change, and we are very late to it.

Draft agenda is below.

But also: Since the City of Marietta has planted NO trees in the past year, our own Roger Kalter has worked with the city’s tree commission, and purchased something like 45 trees, large and small, to be planted in the next few weeks in Knox Park, along the River Trail, and in other tree-worthy city locations. He has enlisted help from Marietta College students and others, but it’s going to be a big job that he hopes to finish by October 28. He needs helpers—including hole diggers, wheelbarrow pushers, shovelers, overseers, coordinators, and on-site advisors. (So, heavy lifting and dirty hands are not necessarily required of all volunteers, but some.) If you can help in any way during the next few weeks, please let Roger know. Best way to reach him is via phone or text to: (740) 525-1833. Trees, especially those planted young and left to grow for many decades, do a great job of carbon sequestration. This is a something tangible we can do to address climate change. Please, help if you can!
