I walked down there today; the tree that has been removed was a Bradford pear that was not in good shape. They are invasive, short-lived trees with weak wood, and that one had been deteriorating for some time, with branches breaking off onto the sidewalk. In my mind, removing it was a good call. Another tree closer to the river in the same area has also been cut.
