I also think we forget the bench. It invites people to stay
longer and perhaps do things that are undesirable for a
neighborhood. I brought this up early in the discussion because I
think a lot of neighborhoods would not like this type of
arrangement but what about downtown at the edge of the bridge or a
similar location. It's well lighted and out in the open with easy
access. I am thinking that a charging station like they use in
different African locations and rural areas in South America would
work best. Just a pedestal with the solar panel up high enough
it's not easily damaged. I am also wondering how the snow gets
cleared off in bad weather (no open panel, no energy). Our goal
is to demonstrate solar charging and use, not to make everybody
extra comfortable. Since the city likes our proposal they surely
will agree to a slight change. Drawing more people downtown is a
good thing and having it where it's easily visible advertises the
station but also protects it. Annie

This is a big deal. They have continual problems with
folks doing drug deals in their community, often at the park
because there are benches, and a park bench is a perfect spot
for it especially if it is not located near a continuous
light, easily observable from the road and people traffic. I
think if you talked with the folks you could find a different
spot that would be more suitable.

How serious and widespread is this concern about the solar
bench leading to drug deals? Is it worth identifying a new
site or just talking with these people individually to see
what they are really concerned about and how it might weight
against the benefits.
