Did you know that meat requires 11 times more fossil fuel to process than fruits and vegetables? And it takes 96 times more water to produce meat than wheat? In 2011 the General Assembly of the UUA passed a Statement of Conscience on Ethical Eating. It provided faith communities direct means to engage some of the most challenging social issues of our time: hunger and malnutrition, free and fair trade, labor and exploitation, animal rights and human responsibilities, neocolonialism and globalization, environmental degradation and climate change. How far have we come in our own choices and behavior?
